Day 1 in Iceland - The Roadtrip Begins

The idea for a roadtrip around Iceland first came up in 2017. I had just returned from my exchange in Europe and had spent a very short 2 days in Reykjavik and part of the Golden Circle in December 2016, and I was itching to return to this magical country and stay for a longer period of time.

Finally, over a year later in September 2018, the four of us embarked on a month-long trip to Europe, with our last stop being a 10-day road trip around Iceland.

In my view, September is definitely the best time to visit Iceland. Avoiding the tourist season of July and August, we were granted with enough daylight and reasonably decent weather most of the time to visit the sites that we wanted to see without rush (though, in classic Iceland style, the weather was still unpredictable and changed from hour to hour) . The F-roads (the mountain roads that access the highlands) start to close at the end of September as winter begins to creep in, making some sites inaccessible after that month. We were lucky enough to be able to see some sites that were only accessible by F-roads.

After arriving at Reykjavik Airport in the afternoon, picking up our rental car and learning to drive on the other side of the road, we arrived at our first Airbnb in Reykjavik, where we were going to stay for the night before starting our roadtrip around Iceland.

Having stocked up on groceries the night before, we started our drive down the Ring Road towards Vik the next morning. It did not take long before we started encountering the Icelandic landscapes. Inevitably, we stopped by the side of the road within the first hour of our drive to try and pat some Icelandic horses. Approaching these majestic creatures was no easy feat!

Finally, we managed to get close enough to take a few snaps before they ran away...

Although our trip was almost 2 years ago, I will continue to share our adventures over the next few months. Next stop, Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss!
